School District of Sheboygan Falls

Unlocking Potential for Lifelong Learning and Service

Feasibility Study

Additional Documents: Executive Summary
Final Report

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Facilities Study Recently Completed; District Considers Next Steps

The Sheboygan Falls School Board hired Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA), after a competitive proposal and interview process, to conduct a comprehensive facilities assessment of the district’s three buildings in the spring of 2010. EUA presented a draft of this facilities study to the School Board late this summer and the report was validated and accepted by the Board at their September 20, 2010 meeting. Both an executive summary and the complete report are now available for public review on the district website at www.sheboyganfalls.k12.wi.us. A hard copy is also available for review in the District office.

“Completing this study is the first step in a deliberate facilities planning process that will take place over the coming months and years for the Sheboygan Falls School District”, commented District Administrator Dave Wessel. “Clearly our facilities issues need to be addressed but we must thoroughly explore all potential options and gather extensive input from staff and community members before making any long-term decisions”.
Summary findings from the report include:

·          The elementary school is currently serving more students than the building was originally designed to hold. Capacity concerns are particularly evident in core building areas such as the cafeteria and gym. Many rooms are now being used for purposes other than which they were originally planned and designed for in an effort to meet instructional needs.

·          The middle school has many aging basic building systems, handicapped accessibility issues, and classrooms significantly smaller than those provided in more modern schools today.

·          The high school has adequate space for today’s student population and room for future growth. However, larger maintenance issues that have been deferred in recent years, such as sink, door, and flooring replacement, do need to be addressed.

The School Board is now closely reviewing the final report and considering the process to be used to explore potential solutions to the needs identified. The board is also working to define a specific facilities-related vision to help guide planning efforts and future conversations with the entire Sheboygan Falls community. More information will be provided in the coming months as the School Board continues to the next step in the facilities planning process.
