What is your definition of courage? Is it the soldiers fighting for our country in Iraq? Is it a girl that is scared to talk to a boy she likes, but she does it anyways? Or is it someone returning a wallet that they found instead of keeping it? Which of these ideas best defines courage? Courage is used in many different definitions in “To Kill a Mockingbird”. There were a lot of characters who showed courage in diverse ways. Atticus tells this to Jem about what courage means. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know your licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do (112)." Do you see now that courage is hard to define?
