Fruits & Veggies with Every Meal!

  • All students taking school meals will be required to select at least 1/2 up of a fruit and/or vegetable. Our goal is to increase student consumption of fruits and veggies by 25% this year.
  • Sheboygan Falls Schools cafeterias are meeting the tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch!
  • School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Started in School Year 2012-2013, school lunches met additional standards requiring:
    • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce with their meal)
    • A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
    • Fat-free or 1% milk, BGH-free (flavored milk is fat-free, with no high fructose corn syrup)
    • 80% of our grain products are whole grains
    • Age-appropriate calorie limits
    • Less sodium

Help us encourage your students to eat at least a 1/2 cup of fruits and or vegetables with every meal along with their entree and milk.

School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families! Consider that the average bag lunch costs $2.50.

Why does it cost more to purchase a juice and a slice of pizza, rather than milk, fruit and pizza? The NSLP provides reimbursement in addition to or in place of the $2.30-$2.55 lunch cost for every meal served; the district does not receive any NSLP reimbursement for individual items sold, only balanced meals.

Are candy bars, and soda sold through the Food Service program? No, the District’s wellness policy, and the NSLP do not allow high-sugar, high-fat products to be sold. All items sold meet the smart snack rulings.
