Friend of Education Awarded to Whitney Schmidt

Sheboygan Falls Elementary Associate Principal Shelley Hyde, Big Brother, Big Sisters Match Support Specialist Whitney Schmidt, and Sheboygan Falls Elementary Principal Lynn Bub

The School District of Sheboygan Falls recently awarded the Friend of Education honor to Whitney Schmidt of Big Brothers Big Sister of Sheboygan County.

Schmidt started working with the district this past year by helping two new students to connect with something familiar:  their lunch buddy from their previous school in Sheboygan County.  Through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters lunch buddy program, the school was able to provide a small piece of comfort and predictability in a new setting for these two new students.  As administration learned more about the program, the district received additional lunch buddies to pair with other students who could benefit from time with an adult that had nothing to do with their grades or friends.

In recognizing Schmidt, Sheboygan Falls Elementary School Principal Lynn Bub stated,

"While the lunch buddy program is still rather small at our school, it is growing.  In addition to pairing lunch buddies with students at Sheboygan Falls Elementary, our friend of education also paired 30 adults with students at 6 other local schools. The Big Brothers, Big Sisters lunch buddy program matches over 100 students at 21 elementary schools in Sheboygan County and also continues to grow. This special time each week provides students with time to talk about worries, practice social skills, experience positives, and so much more.  Each time a match is made, we get to see the social and emotional benefits for a student, especially increased confidence in their worth as a person.  We look forward to seeing our lunch buddy program continue to grow and expand, and along with it, the confidence and healthy development of our students."
